The Cowbelles

A nationwide organization started in Douglas.

The Cowbelles was organized as a club by 16 ranch wives in Douglas, Arizona on October 17, 1939. Little did they know that their idea would spread to a nationwide organization to "promote friendly and social relations between cattle people and to cooperate for the best interests of our industry, our community, and our country."

The first meeting was held at Mattie Cowan's home and she called it to order as their first President. The 16 Charter Members were:

Leona Boss Pearl Click Mattie Cowan Georgia Cull
Lillie Darnell Clara Eades Lorene Eicks Elsie Glenn
Lucille Glenn Gertrude Johnson Sarah Krentz Marie Murchison
Ada Lou Snure Irene Sproul Dorothy Williams Louise Williams
