Pirtleville Cemetery

at Pirtleville, Arizona

Transcribed by Vynette Sage from information was supplied to the
Arizona Death Records, Volume 3, by Charles H. Field, Jr. of Douglas, Arizona.

Three cemeteries have received the dead of Pirtleville, a suburb of Douglas. The original cemetery was located between Washington Street and the Pirtleville Road, east of KDAP. Apparently only 10 or 12 burials occurred there shortly after the turn of the century and then it was abandoned. OLD PIRTLEVILLE CEMETERY This cemetery is located at the southwest corner of the intersection of U.S. Route 666 and Oak Avenue. Burials no longer take place here at the request of the owner, the Diocese of Tucson. No attempt was made to use locations such as rows or lots due to the helter-skelter arrangement of the graves. In addition to the traditional manner of having tombstones face east, many also face south toward Mexico - so when resurrection took place the person would go to Mexico. This unique alignment was once featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

A plus sign (+) in the miscellaneous data of the following lists indicates the presence of a cross; RDO - abbreviation for recuerdo (rememberance or memory). Q.E.P.D. stands for 'que en paz descanse' which is 'rest in peace'. Sometime people spell phonetically, i.e. ‘tillo’ may be ‘tio’ (uncle).
