Griffin's List of Documented Burials

in the Historic Naco, Arizona Cemetery

Compiled by Robert Silas Griffin

This abandoned cemetery is on property belonging to the Cochise County Board of Supervisors. (parcel # 102-42-005) begins 850’ north of W. Purdy Lane and measures 918’ E to W & 475’ N to S and it borders the eastern edge of Wilson Rd. near a cattle guard.

This badly overgrown cemetery covers a significant area and has been reclaimed by packrats, ground squirrels, javelinas, rattlesnakes and scrub brush.

There was some controversy in 2004 over this cemetery when someone bought the land and wanted to build on it. Since all this, the list is now up to 70 documented burials for the Naco, AZ cemetery/ies. These residents, pioneers and veterans died and were buried in Naco, AZ - only God can sort them out. We can honor, remember and respect them.

Based upon several years of field experience and records research, I am of the opinion that there are additional burials in the historic community cemetery of Naco, Arizona. Death records, certificates, obituaries and other records indicate that the Naco, Arizona cemetery was a community burial ground for the region of SE Arizona - deceased from Bisbee, Don Luis, Douglas, Hereford, Naco, Osborn, Stark and other pioneer settlements were brought to their “final” resting place at Naco, AZ. It is very likely that there are additional headstones that are fallen down and silted over. One large headstone is almost entirely buried near the Kathryn Frazier gravesite and partial excavation is required to determine what is inscribed upon it. There is a very real possibility that additional American military veterans are buried in this cemetery. The range includes veterans of the Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, Border Duty and Buffalo Soldiers. It goes without saying that several of these documented burials are Arizona Pioneers.
