Wengert, V.V.

The newspaper obit says Wengert worked at Phelps Dodge smelter, went to Wisconsin briefly, then came back here to work at Douglas Army Air Force Base. The obit says Wengert died from a 40-foot fall at the airfield.

Born Feb. 8, 1901 in Cole, Iowa. Father: Adam Wengert, born in N.Y.; mother, Ann Northcutt, born in Sandwich, III. Wife, Eulalie, 45. He died May 16, 1944 at 7:30.

The funeral was held out of the Baptist Church with military and Moose Lodge ceremonies. He was buried in the Wills Cemetery.

Pall bearers: Adolph Bohn, E.E. Sanders, Meri Keltor, Melvin Herbert, Lyman Perrin, E.A. Wolfram.

Wengert was a WWI vet, a carpenter and Civil Service employee. Social Security number: 526-09-7946. Total residence in Arizona: 14 years.

In Carr Canyon, Huachuca Mountains there is the grave of Carl Biedermann, who is buried on his homestead.  The marker reads Prof. C. R. Biedermann Died June 23, 1932 Age 93

The cemetery there has 13 graves, only one is marked...Daniel Crimmins died Dec. 14, 1902 aged 47 years.

CHARLESTON

Charleston had two or three graves for the Howell family, relatives of Viola Howell Slaughter. Several years ago somebody dug up the graves and sold parts of the caskets at a yard sale. The sheriffs office stepped in when somebody reported the headstones being priced for sale.

COURTLAND CEMETERY

is located near the ghost town of Courtland, which is on the Pearce Road, some 11 miles south of Pearce and 3 miles north of Gleeson. It is 19 miles south of Tombstone. The cemetery, on land owned by E.Molina, was in use as late as 1918. There are some 85 graves that have not been identifeid and only 4 on which the inscriptions are legible. It was surveyed in the the summer of 1971 by Mrs. John Schwartzmann and Dr. and Mrs. E.B.Jolley.

FAIRBANK CEMETERY

There were at least 10 burials here, none of them were legibly marked. The cemetery is near the town of Fairbank which was on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It is on private land and closed to the public because of vandalism.


FRIERSON GRAVE SITE

This lone grave was discovered by Richard and Donna Austin and family about a mile from the Forest Service gate in Brown Canyon. The latter merges into Ramsey Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains. The grave has a cement wall around a 10 x 10 patch of ground. The wall is only a foot high and a pipe fence is around the cement. The stone is cement and built into the wall with the inscription:

EDWARD JOHN HANDS GRAVE SITE

John Hands is buried in Portal, next to the museum he had there.

HEREFORD or HERFORT HILL

Per the Arizona Death Records book, LDS film # 599848 reports 4 burials here, with no names or dates. The location was never given or verified. There is a cemetery at Hereford, on the hill on the west side of the river, this would be along the De Valle wagon road.

LAMAR FAMILY CEMETERY

This cemetery is located north of Douglas off of Route 191. Take 191 north 2.8 miles, West on the Section Road for a mile, then North and then West again to the cemetery. In 1975 when surveyed by Jeanne Harmon and Zola White, there appeared to be 17 burials, with only nine of them identifiable. Here are 7 of them and we're working on the other two.

LEAKE CEMETERY

This cemetery is located on land homesteaded by the Leake family two years after their arrival in Douglas from Texas on 9 Oct 1902. To reach the cemetery drive north on Kings Highway until you are 1/2 mile past the big dip. Though not on the highway, the cemetery may be seen to the east. It may be approached by turning east onto Leake Road and then south to the home of current owners Karen and David Bond. Inscriptions:

Located abt. 10 miles S. W, of Benson on old Naegle Ranch near Mescal Railroad Station.

MIRAMONTE CEMETERY
Located abt. 10 miles SW of Benson on the Bill Williams Ranch

At time of death these graves located near Whetstone, a railraod station, in a cow pasture. It was called Miramonte, a LDS Branch and settlement, now not in existence. Presently located on Bill Williams Ranch. Several LDS families homesteaded this area and one of the members gave a deed to the Rranch, called Miramonte, for 5 acres for a cemetery. Later the members mostly moved away with exceptions of 3 or 4 that kept their ranches. The Ward was dissolved and records sent to Pomerene Branch. Records were secured from Arvilla Davis Anderson, a mother and sister to the two deceased.


MORGAN GRAVE SITE (or ASH CANYON)

10-3-1861 TO 12-18-1933
There is one grave in Ash Canyon and the headstone reads:
Ben Morgan - Husband of Jessie Dunton - Father of Charles

PAXTON GRAVE

Four photographs and a letter from Agua Prieta, Sonora, dated 1965 were recently found at the Chamber of Commerce in Douglas. Apparently the writer had lost the address of the party requesting the photographs of the tombstone which reads as follows:

Paxton, Beatrice died 12 Feb. 1912. To The Memory of; Beloved Wife of James Thompson. Tiche Paxton. She needs no prayers Thank God

POTEET CEMETERY

is just inside the New Mexico border at Rodeo. Partial description of the graves there is:
Mr Poteet who died at age 40

Mrs Poteet was about 20 and her maiden name was Mc Bee.   P C "Big Nose" Sanders who was a half brother to one of them.  It is believed that they all died of the flu outbreak in 1917.


POTTER GRAVE

A single grave along Turkey Creek near Sunizona reads:

Potter, Doctor J. S. born on the 17th of March in the year 1843, died 26 Mary 1917. A Godly Man, loved his family, relieved much suffering, saved many lives

RATLIFF GRAVES

Mr & Mrs William Ratliff are buried in Montezuma Canyon, now part of the Coronado National Forest. It was called the Zaleski Ranch for Joe Zaleski that ran the place as a guest ranch called the Border Ranch during the 1930's.
